PAX Unplugged uses one hall at the convention center and subdivides it into Exhibitors (with hordes of demos) on one half and gaming on the other half. The fact that someone found it 'too large' seems to condemn it and makes it seem like it's gigantic, when it really isn't. PAX Unplugged is the 'smallest' of all of PAX conventions, and it all takes place in only a _portion_ of the Philadelphia Convention Center. Third, in response to the Contrary View posted below. One nice thing about PAX lines is that NO ONE has priority or special access within the line, so it really _is_ first-come, first-served. There are limits (fire code) for each space, and PAX must (like security screening) abide by those. Standing line and _possibly_ not getting into a 'theater' or panel or workshops, etc. Second, 'standing line for an event/class'. I'd also suggest NOT arriving to the convention within the first 30min of opening, and that will-typically-reduce the wait in security lines. Like so many things at any given convention, being patient is necessary. Having read what others have already shared with you, I want to clarify what some of them identify as 'negatives' so that you have the most accurate understanding of what PAX Unplugged is like.įirst and foremost, regarding 'security lines': whether we like it or not, the security screenings are mandated by the city and state, and the convention center must abide by the requirements of events (such as PAX Unplugged) cannot occur within that space. Howdy, Enforcer for PAX Unplugged here, and wanted to contribute to 'what you can expect'. I headed there immediately Friday morning and got taught "newton" but a CMON staffer, and ended the weekend playing "underwater cities" there. Though the teachers varied in skill and which games they knew. A much better alternative was the "first looks area" this was on the other side of open gaming last year and dozens of new games all set out to play and teachers where there to give you rules explanations. I saw that situation and steered clear of it. I see people complaining about demos in the vendor area. The game library while large had multiple copies of games that weren't that interesting, mostly mainstream games I either own and choose not to own. I wanted to check out the up-pub room but just never found time. I saw maybe 1/3 of the vendors before i gave up and just did open gaming as it was too time consuming. And there is so much to see which is good and bad. So really this is a 2 day convention fri/sat. Other conventions you can start earlier and end later. especially with the security line you couldn't get started till like 10:30 - 11am. There is Euroquest in Baltimore around the same time, or WBC in western PA in the summer. I much prefer smaller conventions, especially if you just want open gaming. For me its too big, too crowded but I'll probably go because I'm local and friends are going.
